Introduction to RTI
What is RTI?
The Right to Information Act (RTI) 2005 empowers Indian citizens to seek information from public authorities, thereby promoting transparency and accountability in the functioning of the government. This act covers all levels of government, including the central, state, and local bodies.
Importance of RTI
RTI enables citizens to participate actively in the democratic process by accessing information about government activities and decisions. This empowerment fosters a culture of openness, reduces corruption, and ensures that the public authorities are held accountable to the people.
How to File an RTI Application
Step 1: Identify the Public Authority
Determine the public authority that holds the information you need. This could be a government department, ministry, or local body.
Step 2: Draft Your Application
Write a clear and concise application. Include your personal details, the information you are seeking, and any other relevant details.
Step 3: Submission Methods
You can submit your RTI application online, by post, or in person at the relevant office.
Step 4: Fee Payment
The application fee is typically ₹10. Payment can be made via cash, demand draft, banker’s cheque, or through online methods.
Step 5: Receipt of Application
Upon submission, you will receive an acknowledgment with a registration number for tracking your application.
Online RTI Filing Portal
The RTI Online portal allows Indian citizens to file RTI applications and first appeals for central government ministries, departments, and other public authorities. Payments can be made through various methods, including internet banking, debit/credit cards, RuPay cards, and UPI. Note that this portal is not intended for state government-related RTI requests.
